A Weekend in Amsterdam

Monday, February 20, 2017

Dave and I took a little trip to Amsterdam last week, just the two of us! It was so nice to get away from the kids for a few days and just spend time as a couple. And we honestly couldn't have picked a prettier city to explore together. Just a 45 minute flight bought us to a rather snowy Amsterdam and with two full days, we had more than enough time to explore everywhere we had researched before hand.

We stayed at the Hoxton hotel. It was absolutely stunning, so stylish and arty and right by the Jordaan district, which is full of street art and pretty quirky shops. The hotel staff were super friendly and made us feel like the only guests there! We were given a free breakfast in the mornings, which was lovely, and a full pint of free milk in our mini bar every morning for all those cups of tea and coffee!

The canals were absolutely stunning and so pretty to explore. I loved sitting on the benches facing the canals with a hot cup of coffee, just watching the bikes ride past us! Amsterdam is so fun and colourful, and there were lots of pretty walls and views to photograph. My back actually killed by the end of our trip from carrying a heavy camera all day! But it was totally worth it!

There were so many places I wanted to eat, but SLA was at the top of my list! It's a beautiful little venue, with plants coming out the walls and gorgeous big windows letting in lots of light. Their salads and soups were amazing, seriously the best I have ever tasted! We weren't sure they would fill us up, but my goodness they did!

And of course, you can't go to Amsterdam without tasting their pancakes. We were recommended Pancakes.Amsterdam and I can honestly say they were the best pancakes I have ever tasted. I have no idea how they get them so fluffy and light, and yet so flipping sweet! In contrast to most places, Pancakes was a huge building with lots of light and pretty decoration. It can get very busy here though, so I would recommend going pretty early in the morning. And if you can get through the plate, you probably won't need lunch!!
